If you cannot find an answer to your question then please raise a question in the wiki help area. Someone will answer you soon and your post will help others in the future.

Changes will not be made to a page until you press the save button so if you want to escape from an edit you are working on just press the cancel button and nothing will be changed. If you do press the save button and then realise you have made a mistake, the situation is easily recovered since the wiki keeps all old versions of pages. So it's just a case of switching back to a previous version of a page which you can do yourself through the history button or just contact me with details of the problem and I'll get things fixed.

General

• Think about the reader when writing.
• Write clearly, use punctuation and avoid abbreviations / slang. Some of those who will read your text may not be familiar with abbreviations or may not have English as their first language.
• Don't delete other people's contributions without very good reason.
• Avoid the "click here" phrase. Don't say: "More info can be found here" but use "More info can be found at frequently asked questions". This makes it easier for users who require assistive technologies to use the web page.
• Avoid copying and pasting other people's content unless you have permission or the content is explicitly in the public domain. If you want to quote an excerpt from other content, please attribute the original source.
• Correcting typos is encouraged.
• Be polite and constructive.

• Unless you have a strong reason for contributing anonymously, please create an account and log in before posting. You also might want to create your own personal wiki page.
• If you're not sure about a change you wish to make to a page then consider discussing your change with others using the discuss button at the bottom of each page.
• Think before you comment. Wiki is not a high-speed conversation board - what you say may remain here for a long time.

Tips for Creating Wiki Page Names

• A good wiki page name is short and descriptive. If the name is logical and easy, many more people will link to it.
• A good wiki page name is more likely to look like a chapter title of a book than a complete sentence.
• A wiki page name should be created within its environment e.g. inebg-general:<name> for pages in the general area, inebg-people:<name> for pages in the people area.
• This wiki allows you to create pages with a single word as a name, but try to use at least two words - we don't want to exhaust the name space :-).
• Double-check wiki page names for typos - otherwise you may create a misnamed page! Misnamed pages are bad since linking to them requires more effort than to a logical, correct wiki page name.

Refactoring pages

Refactoring is the process where you sum up a page, removing duplication, shortening it and so making it more accessible. Anyone who feels up to it may go ahead, but if in doubt it's perhaps best left to others.

• Be objective - both pros and cons have to be represented correctly.
• Be careful with signed contributions - don't change their meaning.
• Give credit where credit is due.
• Use third person or plural instead first person singular in your summary.

To create a link to a new page, use syntax: [[[new page name]]] or [[[new page name | text to display]]]. Follow the link (which should have a different colour if the page does not exist) to create a new page and edit it!

A wiki is a medium which can be edited by anyone with access to it, and provides an easy method for linking from one page to another. Wikis are typically collaborative websites, though there are now also single-user offline implementations. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work".

How is a Wiki different from other web sites?

When using any of the wiki systems you don't have to worry about technical details like HTML language, how to edit pages, how to create a forum for your community etc. The wiki engine (in this case Wikidot.com) takes care of all these things allowing you to concentrate on creating content.

On each page (where you have permissions to) you can find an edit button - click it and you can edit content of the page! That's it! There's an easy to learn syntax that Wikidot converts into valid XHTML pages which can be understood by all the main browsers. Simply click edit, make your change, click save and your changes are published within seconds.

And that is it! As a part of Wikidot.com network this site is a customizable piece of the Internet where users can edit content, upload files, communicate and collaborate.

Using the navigation menus

At the top and on the left hand side of each page there is a navigation menu. The one at the top of pages gives links to the more general areas of the wiki while the one on the left hand side of pages gives links to various subject areas. At the bottom of the left hand menu is an area which changes with context so links relevant to the current page may appear here (and those which aren't relevant may disappear!).

Using the Site Map

On the menu at the top of each page is a link to the site map. This gives a hierarchical view of the wiki showing how all the pages link together from the front page downwards. It's a bit like a tree: the front page is the trunk and the linked pages are connected and fan out like the branches and leaves (or roots depending on whether you are thinking up or down!).

Using the breadcrumbs

Funny name I know but this is the term used for the links which appear towards the top of each page under the top menu bar e.g.

Reading from the left, each item is the parent of the next item in the tree structure of the site map. So once you have found your way to a particular wiki page you can easily identify where in the wiki you are and easily jump to one of the parent pages using the breadcrumbs link.

Using tags

Any wiki page can be tagged with one or more words significant to the content of that page. These tags are then displayed towards the bottom left of the page e.g.

The tags are actually links so if you click on one you'll be taken to a page listing all other pages with that same tag and a list of all tags used within the wiki. The relative sizes of the tags within this list show the relative frequency of use of that tag within the wiki. Click on any tag to see a list of all pages tagged with that tag.

Another way of reaching this page listing all the tags is using the Page Tags link in the left hand menu bar.

Using the site search

At the top right hand corner of every page there is a search box. Enter your search criteria, press search and the wiki will do its best to find what you want!

Didn't do the yoga yesterday, was too tired somehow. And I knitted. They say knitting is the new yoga, so there you go.
It's nice and sunny outside, though rather misty and cold. Have sorted a few items from my list already this morning,
so might have time later on for some cardiovascular exercise and a stroll through the park, will see…
Still loads to do thoguh, but I am determined. This cold and exhaustion malarky will not get me down. And I still have the full weekend to recover before having to be back at work on Monday. Hey ho!

Back from the docs, blood taken, ECG taken, health chat had,
now breakfast and tired again.

I am not feeling too well today, will go back to bed soon and read there, maybe work a bit, will see how I feel, I am not going to sacrifice my health for something I can live without.
I am rather demoralised at the moment.
And I got a book on healthy eating which shows me ways to lower my high blood pressure,
and a book that shows me how to do yoga,
so here I come, I just need time between work and college and sleep… *doubtful look*

Hope everyone has a good day ahead. I'm spending the day cleaning the bathroom as my mum and sis are coming down on friday and I need to show them I do do some housework occasionally lol.

Will have a look through my cookbooks to find something spectacular to wow them with for dinner. Better make some bread and some beutter too thinking about it. Will be fun fitting that lot into walking to school 3 times today!

I've written myself a nice long list of jobs to do today, on the offchance that I finally get sent my work for tomorrow. Top of the list is to send off for my indexing course, so the next time work is delayed, or I have any slack periods, I'll have something constructive to do :)

I thought I'd try starting a new thread each morning as the wiki doesn't seem to do new pages. Mr Ratty, is there a way of locking yesterday's thread? If for any reason you think this isn't a good idea, do feel free to say!

Not too sure what I'm doing today yet - depends on whether the postman brings me work or not. I will be making a mega-batch of Mexican beans though - hey Mr Ratty, it's Mexican for tea!
