Month By Month

What to do in the Garden, month by month

Many new comers (and quite a few old hands!) often wonder about what needs to be done in and around their plots at different times of the year. Hopefully here we'll be able to provide some hints and tips about what folk normally get up to that will help you work out what to sow, plant out, harvest or tidy up.

Note that, initially at least, these notes are written by someone who gardens in the middle of England. If you're further north (Scotland, northern parts of Canada, etc) you might find that spring happens later, more things get compressed into a short summer and autumn happens earlier. Similarly the weather varies from year to year so you might find you end up having to do two (or three!) months work in one month if conditions haven't been right.

Don't worry if you're a bit late - seed is cheap and there's always a chance that an Indian summer will allow a late crop to flourish. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say. Think of these notes as rough pointers as to what to be thinking about but be driven mostly by your local conditions: that's part of connecting with nature when gardening.

If you're reading this whilst sitting upside down in the southern hemisphere, just read six months ahead from your current date (so if its March in Oz, you should be looking at August/September in the list below). And hold on tight down there!
